THE NECESSITY OF PREACHING ON HELL
(Friday Church News Notes, August
19, 2011, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org) –
The following is from James Wigton, “Lee
Roberson: Always about His Father’s Business”, pp. 272, 273:
“In his sermon, Do We Need A New
Gospel? Dr. Roberson stated that he did not enjoy preaching about hell--that he
would rather preach about God’s love and about heaven. ‘But one day I shall
give an account of myself and of my ministry to God,’ he said. ‘In that day I
do not want my hands to be stained with the blood of others. Therefore, I must
faithfully proclaim the truth of God’s wrath upon all who reject the Savior.”
Roberson recalled the day when he
preached strongly on hell in a week-long series of revival meetings at Woodlawn
Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Many people were saved in the meetings.
The church was the second largest church in Birmingham at that time. ...
Roberson related the story in his sermon, Seventy-One Years of Fundamentalism.
‘[The pastor] called me back in his
office one night toward the end of the week,’ Roberson remembered. ‘He said, I
promised the deacons when I came to this church that I would not preach on
hell. So, I have not preached on hell one single time in these five years! Now,
I regret it so much when I see what God has done here in just a week’s time. My
church has been dying because I have been holding back from them the Word of
God!’”
To My Fellow Pastor,
Are you holding back from your
brethren in your church God’s Precious Pure Word? When was the last time you
preached on the Doctrine of Hell? Remember, we who are called to preach the Gospel is not only responsible but ACCOUNTABLE to Him who
called us even our God and Saviour the LORD Jesus Christ! There is a day of
reckoning.
